Helicopters

Do you know what a helicopter is? It is a type of an airplane that doesn't have wings. The first helicopter in the world was invented in Italy. A helicopter carries a small number of passengers and it doesn't fly at a great speed like a big airplane.

It doesn't need a runway to take off or land. It can be used to do many things like putting out fires in forests, transferring sick people to hospitals, reaching people who live in far away places and it can also be used to help the police do their work. Some TV stations own helicopters and use them to give traffic updates. There are other things that helicopters can be used for.

Some people like to take a ride on a helicopter and see the sights when they go on holidays. These rides normally go for less than one hour but they cost a lot of money.

Some rich people and film stars own helicopters and use them to travel from one place to another.

In the picture you can see a helicopter used to fight fires. You can see something like a bucket that can be quickly filled with water. The pilot who flies the helicopter drops the water on the fire from above and puts it out in seconds.

The air forces in many countries use helicopters when they go to war. The Italians were the first to use helicopters in wars nearly 100 years ago when they bombed the big cities in Libya and occupied the country for a very long time.
