Ben Southall is a very lucky man. He's got a job that will see him get 150,000 dollars in 6 months for doing almost nothing. His new job is to work as a caretaker of Hamilton Island in Queensland in Australia. Ben Southall is not Australian. He is British.
All he has to do is to walk along the beach, feed the fish, go scuba-diving, keep a blog and post pictures and videos on the internet to let people know about the island.
Ben Southall was one of 34,000 people who applied for the job. Tourism Queensland asked anyone who wanted to apply for that job to post a video on the internet and say why he or she was the best person for the job.
People from different parts of the world applied for the job. Finally 16 people from 15 countries were selected including two from Australia. They were asked to travel to Hamilton Island in Queensland to have interviews. Applications for the job opened in January 2009. Ben was selected in May.
The applicants lived together for two weeks and became friends. It was a special moment for Ben when he was chosen for the job. His friends congratulated him.
He is only 34 years old and he became very famous after getting the best job in the world. He now lives in a three-bedroom beach home with his Canadian girlfriend. Before getting the job he worked as a tour guide in England.
Tourism Queensland said they were happy that millions of people around the world now know about Queensland and Australia. This would make more people want to visit Hamilton Island and help the economy.
Some Australians are not happy because the job was not given to an Australian. They say that Australian jobs should be kept for Australians.
