The Friendly Games

In 1956 The Olympic Games were held in Melbourne, Australia. During that year, the cold war between Russia and America was at its height. Russia invaded Hungary and crushed its people. Russia sent hundreds of tanks to the capital Bucharest and controlled the country. Thousands were killed and the West did not give them any help. Israel, France and England invaded Egypt and thousands were killed but they failed to occupy the country. This was called the Suez War. The war took place after the Egyptian president Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, which was controlled by England and France. Many cities were destroyed. The war stopped only when Russia said it would use the atomic bomb against any country invading Egypt.

Some countries like Iraq and Lebanon did not take part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne because they were not happy about the war that Israel, France and England started in the Middle East. Other countries like Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland did not take part in the games because Russia was there. The whole world was on fire. But the Melbourne Olympic Games were called “The Friendly Games”.

The Russian and the Hungarian teams clashed with each other while playing water polo and there was a big fight. There was a lot of blood in the pool. The Hungarians won the gold medal and the Russians got a bronze. One Chinese young man whose name was John Wing lived in Melbourne. He sent a letter to the Olympic Games Committee. He said it would be a good idea if all the players marched together as one team. The Olympic Committee thought it was a good idea and all the athletes marched together. John was only 17 years old and his idea saved the Olympic Games.

Fill in the gaps:

country -part - saved - bomb - Spain - nationalized - Melbourne
