Waste Collection

The local council offers two hard waste collections every year. This is a good chance for many people to get rid of their old televisions, fridges, beds and other things. Before the collection takes place, you get a leaflet in your mailbox that has some information about the collection. In this leaflet you will know what type of hard rubbish you can get rid of and how to get rid of it. You can telephone your local council to get information on the hard waste collection in your street.
The council will collect your old tins, waste metal, empty paint tins, old furniture, refrigerator, washing machine, dishwasher and chinaware. When you get rid of your old fridge, remember to remove the door and lie it down on one side. If you leave the door on, your fridge will NOT be collected. As for your tree branches, you may have to tie them into bundles of no more than 1.5 metres in length. Also put your tree roots in bundles. If you leave them loose, the council will not collect them and you have to remove them away.
You can NOT get rid of your car tyres, bricks, stone, sand, soil, car parts or building materials during the hard waste collection. Also you can NOT include your old batteries, asbestos, recyclables or chemicals in your hard waste. If you do so, you may get a fine from your council.
Council trucks will collect your hard and green waste from the street in front of your house. Different trucks collect different items. For example there will be a truck to collect timber and furniture from the front of your property. Another truck will collect green waste. And yet another one will collect piles of scrap metal.
The limit for each property is three cubic metres of waste and bundled branches. Do not leave your hard waste in the street too early before the collection. Start getting rid of your waste seven days before the collection takes place. If your waste is not taken away during that period, you can ring your local council.
